It is possible for your surgeon to take your own fat and inject it into other areas of your body to fill in wrinkles and indentations. The most common areas for treatment are the nasolabial folds (from the root of the nose to the angle of your mouth), the corners of the mouth, the cheeks, and the lip, but any area of the body can be treated. Newer techniques have made fat injections more reliable. The results can last for years. Fat injections require sterile conditions so they are usually performed as an outpatient procedure in an surgical facility. Mild swelling and bruising may occur but usually resolves in 7 to 10 days. Recent studies have suggested that the "stem cells" included with fat injections (also called fat grafting) may actually improve the quality and youthfullnes of the overlying skin as well as add volume.
