Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
Over time, the effects of gravity along with the loss of the skin's natural elasticity begins to have an effect on the appearance of a woman's breasts. These factors, combined with pregnancies, nursing, and weight fluctuations will often cause the breasts to sag and lose their youthful shape and firmness.
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise, reshape, and increase the firmness of sagging breasts. The procedure can also reduce the size of the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple). Most techniques for uplifting breasts involve tightening the skin of the breast. For those patients who are happy with the size of their breasts, tightening of the skin is usually the best option. There are different types of incisions used to tighten the skin. The length and placement of incisions used will depend on the amount of excess skin and degree of droop that exists.
Many women with sagging breasts also want an increase in size. If this is the case, correction of mild degrees of sagging may be achieved by inserting implants alone. Skin removal may not be necessary. When there is more significant drooping, breast implants can be inserted in conjunction with a skin removal and tightening. This combination of procedures will increase both firmness and size.
Dr. Sternschein will help you choose the technique that will give you significant uplift, minimize scars, and increase the size if this is desired.
