Breast Surgery

There are many reasons why women have plastic surgery performed on their breasts. For some women, their breasts may be too small or too large, for others it may be a need to correct an imbalance or perhaps reconstruct their breasts after a mastectomy. Whatever the concern, creating natural breasts that are in balance with the rest of the body is a primary goal for Dr. Sternschein.

Breast Augmentation
(Augmentation Mammaplasty)

Breast augmentation is a very popular procedure for women and among the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures. Dr. Sternschein believes achieving a natural look is the most important goal of breast augmentation. The new breast size should be in proportion and in balance with your body frame. In addition, the breast should have a natural "teardrop" shape. Excessive superior bulging and a round shape should be avoided.

There are many different techniques used for breast augmentation. Saline-filled implants or the new cohesive silicone gel ("gummy bear") implants can be inserted under the crease in the breast, around the nipple or through the armpit. The implant can be placed under the breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle. Dr. Sternschein does not have a "standard" technique for breast enlargement. He has over 25 years of experience using all techniques. He will discuss with you the pros and cons of the different methods. Your input and desires are crucial. Taking into consideration your anatomy and wishes, Dr. Sternschein will recommend the particular techniques that are best for you.

After surgery, your breasts will appear "fuller" and have a natural shape and contour. Your figure will be balanced and have improved proportion. Clothes will look better and fit better. This procedure can enhance your self-image and self-confidence.

Breast Lift
(Mastopexy)

Over time, the effects of gravity along with the loss of the skin's natural elasticity begins to have an effect on the appearance of a woman's breasts. These factors, combined with pregnancies, nursing, and weight fluctuations will often cause the breasts to sag and lose their youthful shape and firmness.

A breastlift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise, reshape, and increase the firmness of sagging breasts. The procedure can also reduce the size of the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple). Most techniques for uplifting breasts involve tightening the skin of the breast. For those patients who are happy with the size of their breasts, tightening of the skin is usually the best option. There are different types of incisions used to tighten the skin. The length and placement of incisions used will depend on the amount of excess skin and degree of droop that exists.

Many women with sagging breasts also want an increase in size. If this is the case, correction of mild degrees of sagging may be achieved by inserting implants alone. Skin removal may not be necessary. When there is more significant drooping, breast implants can inserted in conjunction with a skin removal and tightening. This combination of procedures will increase both firmness and size.

Dr. Sternschein will help you choose the technique that will give you significant uplift, minimize scars, and increase size if this is desired.

Breast Reduction
(Reduction Mammaplasty)

Large, pendulous breasts may cause a woman to experience various medical problems caused by the excessive weight of the breast tissue. Problems with posture, skeletal deformities, back and neck pain, skin irritations and breathing difficulties are common with this condition. Bra straps often leave indentations in the shoulder area. Many women are very self-conscious of their large breasts. Clothing options are limited and execise is difficult and/or painful.

Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) removes fat, glandular breast tissue, and excessive skin, resulting in smaller, lighter, uplifted, and firmer breasts that have a better shape and in proportion to rest of the body. There are many different techniques for reducing the size of the breast. The technique used will depend on the pre-existing size of your breast. All techniques involve decreasing volume, reshaping, and uplifting the breast. Every effort will be made to minimize scars. Dr. Sternschein will discuss with you the pros and cons of the different methods for reduction of your breast size. He will recommend the best technique for you.

Women who have breast reduction surgery often refer to it as a "liberating experience". Activity and exercise will be easier. Your entire body shape will improve and you will have better proportion and balance. Clothes will fit better and you will have many more options regarding styles. You will look great and feel great.

Breast Reconstruction

Reconstruction of the breast after a mastectomy due to cancer or other disease is quite possible with today's surgical procedures. There are now federal and state laws that require all insurance companies to cover this procedure. Using the newest medical techniques, a plastic surgeon is often able to create a breast that is similar in form and appearance to that of the natural breast.

Reconstruction can be done at the same time as the mastectomy or delayed until months or years after the mastectomy. The timing should be discussed with your breast surgeon and plastic surgeon. The reconstruction of the breast can be accomplished using implants or your own tissue ("flaps"). There are pros and cons to each of these techniques. A consultation is essential to discuss what is best for you, taking into consideration your anatomy, medical condition, and your personal desires.
